DiverseWorks is seeking multiple female performers to participate in a new performance work by artist Kate Gilmore, as part of the upcoming exhibition Kate Gilmore and Heather Rowe: Only in Your Way. The exhibition uses sculptural objects and ongoing performative acts to pose questions about architectural spaces in relation to the female body.

Performers will work directly with the artist and DiverseWorks staff for this performance, which begins the week of January 16 and continues through March 18, 2017. Performers must be able to stand, walk, and carry a small object for 4 hours. This is a paid performance opportunity. DiverseWorks is W.A.G.E. Certified (Working Artists in the Greater Economy). Interviews will be held the first week of January 2017.

ABOUT KATE GILMORE

Kate Gilmore received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York, NY (2002) and her undergraduate degree from Bates College, Lewiston, ME (1997). She has

participated in the Queens International, Queens Museum, New York (2016); 2010 Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum of American Art; The Moscow Biennial, Russia (2011); and PS1 Greater New York, MoMA/PS1 (2005 and 2010), in addition to numerous solo exhibitions across the United States. Gilmore is an Associate Professor of Art and Design at Purchase College, SUNY, Purchase, NY.

Gilmore’s current artistic practice includes the orchestration of large-scale installations and live public performances that use the female body as a site for the articulation of identity, labor, and endurance. Her work reassesses feminist performance practices of the 1960s and 1970s, and she taps into the distinctly human drive to push our bodies to their physical limit. In recent years, Gilmore’s practice has evolved to include large-scale public performances in which she directs the actions of female protagonists, as well as durational gallery performances in which the action is repeated over the course of multiple weeks.
