THE HAPPENING

KINDER HSPVA 50TH ANNIVERSARY ALUMNI EXHIBITION

DiverseWorks is pleased to present the Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts 50th Anniversary Alumni Exhibition, The Happening, from October 28 – November 27, 2021.

Formed in 1971, HSPVA represents the first attempt by any public high school in the nation to correlate an academic program with concentrated training in the arts. DiverseWorks hosted HSPVA’s twenty-fifth anniversary exhibition in 1997 and is proud to recognize the lasting impact of this unique institution.

The exhibition’s title, The Happening, is the name of the beloved performance event led by the HSPVA students during lunchtime to collaborate, experiment, and try out new ideas with each other. It encapsulates the ethos of a school whose core mission is a deeply-rooted belief in self discovery and the arts as a career path. For me and for many of us, our time at HSPVA invaluably shaped our lives. This anniversary exhibition presents a multi-generational view of artists whose widely diverse practices share the same beginning.

—Laura Mott (’97), Exhibition Juror and Senior Curator of Contemporary Art, Cranbrook Art Museum

The artists were selected by invitation and through an open call process by Xandra Eden, Executive Director, DiverseWorks; Laura Mott (‘97), Senior Curator of Contemporary Art and Design, Cranbrook Art Museum; and Anthony Suber (‘98), Artist, Educator and VP-Artist Advisory Committee, DiverseWorks.

ABOUT KINDER HSPVA

Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (Kinder HSPVA) is the internationally renowned arts magnet school of the Houston Independent School District (HISD). Established in 1971, the school evolved from a realization that gifted young artists need highly specialized and rigorous training in the arts to be prepared for the intense competition they will meet in colleges, conservatories, and the professional arts world. Its creation represented the first attempt by any public high school in the nation to correlate an academic program with concentrated training in the performing and visual arts. Students undergo a rigorous application and audition process to earn acceptance into one of the six art areas: Creative Writing, Dance, Instrumental Music, Theatre, Visual Arts, and Vocal Music.
