Alchemy House: Spring Equinox Performance
The Alchemy House was a project in which a condemned Houston house was altered using various materials associated with alchemy, specifically lead, salt, copper, mercury, and sulfur. This project explored the natural cycle of death, life, and birth, as well as the importance of the cosmic furnace and fire in the transformation process. In order to celebrate the spring equinox as well as the beginning of the demolishing of the house, the artists Kelli Scott Kelley and Amy Ell orchestrated a “moving sculpture” which took place throughout the house and explored symbols of alchemy. This project was partially funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts through the Forms Regional Initiative Grants Program, co-administered by DiverseWorks and Mexic-Arte.
