Rafael Campo and Robin Reagler: Reading
This was part of the “Beyond Desire: New Gay and Lesbian Performance and Film Series.” Campo was a physician and a poet who won the 1993 National Poetry Series Open Competition with his manuscript, The Other Man Was Me, which had been recently published. The collection was a voyage of many discoveries: people lose their homeland, an immigrant’s son discovers his sexual and cultural identities, and a physician awakens to the sufferings of his patients. The last section especially explores the gay American identity, in the particular context of the doctor/patient relationship in the age of AIDS. Reagler was a Houston writer and poets and was finishing her Ph.D. in the University of Houston Creative Writing Program.
