OPEN DANCE PROJECT — ALL THE DEVILS ARE HERE: A TEMPEST IN THE GALAPAGOS
AN IMMERSIVE LIVESTREAM PERFORMANCE
Open Dance Project and DiverseWorks co-present the long-awaited premiere of All the Devils Are Here: A Tempest in the Galapagos. The hour-long immersive production choreographed by Annie Arnoult in collaboration with 11 ODP performers will be livestreamed from MATCH Theaters on May 14 & 15, 2021. Filmmakers will simulate the immersive experience of the production through the use of a mobile (gimbal mount) camera for the livestream production that features live music performed and composed by Kirk Suddreath.
Shakespeare’s The Tempest collides with the true story of an unsolved murder in the Galapagos in 1929. This immersive dance theater performance follows the failed attempts of a nihilist couple, a conservative family, and a baroness and her two gay lovers to escape the world of man on the uninhabited island of Floreana. Their conflicting visions of Paradise, sexual and moral “rightness,” colonial instincts, and social and psychological demons lead to disaster and provide a rich canvas for a poignant examination of basic human rights, social justice, and power structures.

Since its inception in 2015, the company has produced 24 world premieres at venues including The Hobby Center, Miller Outdoor Theater, MATCH, The Wortham, and The Moody Center for the Arts, as well as non-traditional venues such as Comic-Con, Discovery Green, The Majestic Metro, and Winter Street Studios. ODP’s unique brand of immersive dance-theater earned the company a spot in Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch” issue in 2018. The company’s work has been called “hands down the most polished and potent dance theater piece ever to come out of Houston” (Nancy Wozny, Arts & Culture Texas) and one of the “top three for reminding us that art is essential, not a luxury, to maintaining our humanity,” (Molly Glentzer, Houston Chronicle).
