SUMMARY:WORKSHOP W/ JULIAN BARNETT AT METDANCE
DESCRIPTION:Come and take a Workshop class with Julian Barnett on October 28th from 10:30AM-12PM at METdance! 2 hours on a class card or $35 for the 1.5 Workshop Class. Read more about Julian and EchoBody below. Registration is directly through METdance. \nJulian is in Houston performing in Takahiro Yamamoto’s new dance work Direct Path to Detour\, presented by DiverseWorks at MATCH October 27 – 29. Tickets and more information here. \nEchoBody: This class focuses on a practice that has been developed throughout Julian’s choreographic body of work\, which has many iterations\, but can be distilled into the term of ‘echoing’. Working individually\, with partners\, and as a collective as the main fulcrum of the class\, different frames are introduced that shift focus to variant possibilities of movement\, timing\, intention\, connection\, and sensation. The class prioritizes the subjective body as an active and changeable compositional form and aims to challenge the mover to push beyond conventional realms of what dance is and emphasize the process of how\, as a way to better understand the what. \nJulian Barnett creates performances that explore the socio-political possibilities for transformation and empathy\, through the lenses of choreography\, philosophy\, science\, musicology\, and the supernatural. His works have been invited throughout the US\, Canada\, Mexico\, China\, Japan\, and since 2012\, actively throughout Europe. Julian’s first work Float\, was acquired by Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and since then\, he has focused on longer\, more experimental works\, creating Bluemarble (Kampnagel\, Hamburg)\, Echologue (Joyce Theater\, NY)\, The Clean State (Sadler’s Wells Finalist\, London) and Sound Memory (Danspace Project\, NY)\, amongst others. Julian performed with the Staatstheater Kassel Tanztheater under Johannes Wieland and was a founding member of his company. During that time (2002-2008)\, Julian was also a founding member of Larry Keigwin’s company and additionally worked with Lar Lubovitch\, Doug Elkins\, and the Metropolitan Opera with Doug Varone. Since then\, Julian has worked with Steve Paxton\, Wally Cardona\, Jeanine Durning\, and his dear friend Takahiro Yamamoto. Julian completed his studies at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and the ArtEZ University of the Arts in the Netherlands. \nImage: Julian Barnett at The Joyce Theater Gotham Dance Festival NYC.
