SUMMARY:The School...Saturday Classes (May 21)
DESCRIPTION:Each Saturday in May\, throughout the run of the exhibition The School for the Movement of the Technicolor People\, Houston members of WXPT will host free public classes in the gallery. No reservations are necessary\, and all experience levels are welcome. Come move with us! \nSATURDAY\, MAY 21\nSession I: 1–2pm\nPiece by Piece\nTaught by: Brittani Broussard\nThis workshop will focus on performance and the staging of identity through the masking\, decoration\, costuming\, and movement of the body. We will begin with materials like fabric\, string\, paper\, plastic\, sequins\, and glue\, pasting them on different parts of our bodies and letting these materials speak to us and catalyze new performances and possibilities of expression. Dance\, make subtle movements\, make large movements\, make no movement at all\, speak\, don’t speak\, sing\, or don’t sing. We will create individual performances and unite at the end to form one large piece. Become what you create. \nBrittani Broussard is a Houston-based performance artist. She received her BFA from the University of Texas at Austin in studio art. \nSession II: 2:15–3:15pm\nCapoeira\nTaught by: Marrio Hinkle\nCapoeira is a Brazilian art form of African origin that incorporates martial arts movements\, dance\, and music. It exemplifies the continuity of movement across the African diaspora. This class will focus on foundational capoeira movement\, mind-body connection\, and the cultural/historic elements of this art form. \nMarrio Hinkle is a capoeira practitioner of over 18 years\, and is a close mentor of WXPT company member Kenneth Owens. \nSession III: 3:30–4:30\nWXPT Company Collective Practice\n\n(Photo: Meadow\, performed by WXPT at the opening reception of The School for the Movement of the Technicolor People\, April 30\, 2016.
