River on Fire is a multidisciplinary exhibition and performance project curated by DW’s Curator Ashley DeHoyos Sauder that explores the conversations related to the impacts and effects of the climate crisis and human reliance on fossil fuels in Houston and the Gulf South region.

The project is inspired by early environmental movements associated with river fires between 1968 – 69 such as the Buffalo River, Buffalo, NY, Cuyahoga River, Cleveland, OH, Rouge River, Detroit, MI, and more locally the 1994 San Jacinto River Fire in Southeast Houston.

River on Fire will be presented at DiverseWorks in the MATCH Gallery, September 28 – November 16, 2024. Artists will be invited to present new and existing work in an exhibition that will be in conversation with pop-up film screenings, climate-focused panels, tours, and site-specific performances developed through community collaborations.
