SUMMARY:Diverse Discourse Lecture: Thomas Lax
DESCRIPTION:Thomas J. Lax is Associate Curator of Media and Performance Art at the Museum of Modern Art. Previously\, he was Assistant Curator at The Studio Museum in Harlem\, the nexus for artists of African descent locally\, nationally and internationally and for work that has been inspired and influenced by black culture. \nMost recently\, he organized the Studio Museum exhibitions When the Stars Begin to Fall: Imagination and the American South (2014) and the Studio Museum’s presentation ofRadical Presence: Black Performance in Contemporary Art (2013). In 2008\, he developed and launched the Museum’s VideoStudio program\, an ongoing series of exhibitions of time-based art; in 2011\, he initiated Studio Lab\, a think tank and short-term residency program for ideas in formation. At the Studio Museum\, he has also organized Fore (2012);Ralph Lemon: 1856 Cessna Road (2012); Lyle Ashton Harris: Self/Portrait (2011); and Kalup Linzy: If it Don’t Fit (2009); among others. Thomas received his BA from Brown University in Africana Studies and Art/Semiotics\, and an MA in Modern Art from Columbia University. \nCo-presented by DiverseWorks and Core Residency Program at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston
