Rachel Rosenthal: Pangaean Dreams: A Shamanic Journey

This event was part of DiverseWorks’ “All the Rage: Solo Women’s Voices” performances series presented alongside The Menil Collection. Rosenthal was born in Paris and immigrated to New York as a World War II refugee. She maintained her relationships with many artists and in 1956, founded the Instant Theater in Los Angeles and co-founded movements such as Womanspace. In this work, Rosenthal used her own aging body as a metaphor for the Earth. She eludes back 250 million years to Pangaea and traced the shattering of the mythical unity of mind, body, and spirit as human evolution runs its course. This piece further emphasized her focus on performances that brought the Earth to the forefront.
