Fresh Arts Workshop: Meet Your Media

Fresh Arts Workshop: Meet Your Media

With Joel Luks of CultureMap, Molly Glentzer of Houston Chronicle, and Bill Davenport of Glasstire

Join Fresh Arts and an esteemed guest panel at DiverseWorks for a candid discussion about what goes on behind the curtains at some of Houston’s most well known publications, how they choose what to cover, as well as a refresher on best practices when writing for any media outlet.

Many of those in charge of external communications for smaller organizations (or individuals), have little or no formal training in writing for the media. That’s OK. This one-part conversation, one-part workshop, will help provide greater understanding of how it works for the writers and how to write a more compelling press release, so you can be better equipped to effectively engage the local media.

We will cover: what it’s like to work as an arts writer in Houston, the basics of strong press releases, common mistakes, pitching stories, requesting corrections, general advice, and resources.

ABOUT THE PANEL

Bill Davenport has been Texas Editor at Glasstire.com since March, 2013. From 2007-2013, he wrote Glasstire’s daily Newswire column, and managed Texas-wide events listings for the site. Davenport arrived in Houston as a CORE Fellow in 1990, contributing writing to Artlies, Artpapers, The Public News, and the Houston Chronicle and publishing the notorious Houston Artletter from 1995-1997. He also continues to be a respected visual artist. His work has been shown at Inman Gallery (Houston), The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, DiverseWorks (Houston), Volume Gallery, New York), Angstrom Gallery (Dallas), IBID Projects (London) and Homeroom (Munich).

Molly Glentzer joined the Houston Chronicle as dance critic in 1998. After serving the paper in many capacities, including seven years as lifestyle editor, she became a senior writer covering arts, design and culture in 2011. That beat includes intensive coverage of the city’s rich and always fascinating visual arts scene. Molly is also a published author. Her book Pink Ladies & Crimson Gents: Portraits and Legends of 50 Roses, was published in 2008 by Clarkson-Potter.

As CultureMap’s listings editor and arts/food writer, Joel Luks’ columns explore Houston’s creative community, with special emphasis on classical music, education and multidisciplinary arts. He pores over thousands of local offerings to curate an extensive lifestyle events guide, manages social media channels and contributes to social marketing strategies. He produces video content and hosts the “Art and About” digital series, in addition to serving as an on-camera anchor for KHOU/CultureMap television segments aired on the morning news. He has been a featured speaker on social media strategy, public relations and trends in the arts.
