CALL Program Legacy Specialist

Creating a Living Legacy (CALL) is a program of the Joan Mitchell Foundation and administered by DiverseWorks that provides support to visual artists in creating comprehensive documentation of their artworks and careers. The Legacy Specialist is a part-time on-the-job training position that builds skills related to basic archiving practices and the handling of art works for the purposes of documentation, cataloging, and storage.  Over the course of approximately one year and while working closely with the CALL Project Manager and DiverseWorks staff, the Legacy Specialist will assist selected visual artists in Houston with the following:

    • documenting works of art
    • inventorying existing records and works of art
    • digitizing records
    • assisting with storage solutions within the artist’s working environment
    • working with artists to set goals, prioritize tasks and track progress
    • using a specialized database to create a comprehensive record of their artistic practice

Hours:  average 6 per week

Compensation:  17 dollars per hour

Preferred or required qualifications:

  • Experience as practicing visual artist
  • Bachelor’s degree in arts related field required, Master’s degree in arts related field preferred
  • Flexible schedule
  • Strong organizational abilities
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and other basic computer skills
  • Experience with photography, Photoshop, and/or web design desirable

Part-Time Visitor Services Associate

DiverseWorks seeks a part-time Visitor Services Associate. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, front desk reception, coordinating the membership program, and assisting with special events.

Qualified candidates will possess:

  • superior writing skills
  • experience working with databases and general office applications
  • excellent customer service skills
  • willingness and ability to work special events outside of normal work hours
  • superior organization skills
  • an outgoing personality and professional demeanor
  • impeccable attention to detail

This is a non-exempt, part-time hourly position. Required hours are Wednesdays 11:30 am – 8 pm and Thursdays – Saturdays 11:30 am – 6 pm. Occasional additional hours are required for exhibition openings, special events, and fundraisers.  Hourly salary commensurate with experience.

Duties, Functions, Responsibilities: 

  • staffs front desk reception area, greeting all visitors and providing information about DiverseWorks’ mission, programs, and events
  • maintains DiverseWorks’ attendance records
  • conducts periodic audience surveys and program evaluations
  • answers telephone
  • maintains DiverseWorks’ general email list
  • assists with general office work as required (mailings, filing, scanning, etc.)
  • processes incoming memberships and monthly renewals, and ensures membership benefits are fulfilled
  • plans and executes membership communications via email, mailings, and telephone
  • plans and executes exhibition opening receptions
  • assists with procurement of in-kind donations for special events
  • assists with volunteer and intern management

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Bachelors Degree in Liberal Arts, Art History, Marketing, Communications, or related field (a background and strong interest in visual, performing, and/or literary arts is preferred)

  • Customer service experience
  • Non-profit experience preferred
  • Experience in an office setting
  • Excellent verbal and written skills
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and meet deadlines
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, Photoshop; experience with Adobe Creative Suite a plus
  • Familiarity with both MAC and PC platforms
  • Ability to participate in modest event-related labor
